For those who use VOIP phones or Skype in place of landline...? What will you do if there is an emergency and need 911 assistance? Do you have any back up plan? I'm shopping for VOIP phone but still hesitant because of the lack of 911 assistance. I like Skype and would like to try it as a home phone but want to know how others deal with this issue. Also anyone use wifi phone for Skype? I wouldn't want to attach to my computer when I receive or call out. What is the reception or call quality? Thanks for any input. Roger, thanks for Magicjack info. I just checked it out and I'm interested in trying that out. However I didn't find the info on whether you can receive phone calls with it? The website says I get local phone number and caller ID and all but it didn't say that I can receive the phone call. Also does the phone needs to be connected to the computer to get the phone call? If it wasn't connected, would it go to voice mail? Thanks. Roger, what do you mean by you will not be affected by power outage? What kind of power back up do you have?
What does the wifi feature on cell phones allow a user to do? I am looking to buy a new cell phone and I recently saw the new features that say wifi and I am completely lost as to what this will enable me to do. Will it let me connect to the internet and browse as if I am on my laptop, talk for free through voip, I am just completely lost if anyone could explain what wifi on a cell phone does and what enables me to do, I would greatly greatly appreciate it. And also what is the best phone to get with this feature and maybe why?

Where would I plug in the viatalk phone router? How strong would the connection be???

WIFI on cell phones? I have a question about WIFI on cell phones. Say for instance i have an unlocked nokia N81 phone which has built in WIFI, and i have a prepaid phone service, so its basically pay as i use and i recharge again(no contract). Since my phone has the ability to connect to the internet thru any public Hotpspot, would i need a data plan? Or will i be able to connect and use the surf the internet without my mobile service provider charging me? What about if i had a contract fone, but didn't have a data plan? If i used a voip service on my fone that wud use a WIFI connection, would my actual plan minutes get used up? I understand i'd have to pay for the voip service, but would making calls affect my minutes on my fone?

I power a VoIP phone as well my internet based applications.
Skype users, how can I use that service with mobility? When I get or make a phone call, I don't want to sit in front of the computer all the time. Do any of you use wifi phone at home? What is the call quality? Is it worth the money to buy the phone? Any good or bad using Skype as a home phone (or cell phone)? I'm in the market for VOIP phone that I can replace my current landline phone and possibly cell phone. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.
VoIP through WiFi connection with Nokia N80 or E70 ? Can I place and receive calls through Skype or Yahoo! Voice over a Wi-Fi network with the latest Wi-Fi compatible Nokia phones (or 3G mobile phones from any other manufacturer). Alternatively, any suggestion on how I could use my Yahoo!Voice UK phone number (+4420...) while away in the US?
is there anyway to convert a landline phone signal to 802.11b/g wifi signal? specifically, i am trying to configure a way to use a wifi phone with my optimum voice(ov) by cablevision account so that i will have "hotspot"connectivity through my home phone connection. although cablevision claims that it's ov service is "voip", it is not really. they use an intergrated optimum online(ool) and ov cable modem to route the 2 signals separately over the same cable at different bandwidths. the ov signal never crosses onto the ool signal so it is never truly on the internet protocol and can not be accessed from the internet. i would like to find a device that coverts it over or bridges it onto the internet so that it could be accesssed wirelessly. any ideas? maybe quicklogic has a solution, arcticlink? i do realize that ov is also not a true landline either although it incorporates landline equipment and inhouse wiring into its system. it is a sort of hybrid system that i will call "cablelandline" or simply "cableline". i envision a device and software that connects my landline and/or cableline to my to my home 802.11b/g wireless router and recognizes me as the serviceprovider subscriber, i.e. my home telephone # for 2-way calling from wifi "hotspots" or access points.
With any software/hardware (and ubiquitous WiFi), is there any complete WiFi cell phone solution? I would like to get rid of my Cingular monthly cell plan and use VoIP instead since it's so much cheaper, and I have WiFi everywhere on my college campus. Will any combination of software (e.g. Skype, Gizmo, Yahoo) and hardware (Pocket PC, Palm, Smartphone) allow me to pull this off? So far I have found Skype + Pocket PC with SkypeIn and SkypeOut. This looks good but I'm not sure how receiving calls would work (i.e. if the Pocket PC would run out of batteries after being on round the clock). Plus, I would need a headset. Does anyone know if I can yet achieve my dream of a WiFi cell phone with quality sound?

What about during a storm - any issues with connection or speed? I work from home and need to have a reliable and fast connection, would you recommend this service? I power a VoIP phone as well my internet based applications. I currently use a VoIP phone on Comcast at the house. I am not as happy with current phone as I was with Vonage, also on Comcast. I'm not sure what the problem is unless it has something to do with the current phone having to talk to a server at my company's headquarters perhaps? I get feedback, people say I sound like I'm in a bucket sometimes - I was told this was because of the speed of my connection since it is consistently a problem. So, shall I expect it to be even worse on a boat?

Help with DS Homebrew Apps DSAIM and voIP Phone Thingy? I've downloaded the AIM and the Cell Phone apps for the R4DS, but they don't work. I've done everything correct. On the AIM, it says "Authenticating Wifi Connecting" then about 45 seconds later it says " Connection Failed" but it's not my router (or else I couldn't submit this...) and using the Phone it dials, then says the call couldn't go through and fails. It's not my router as it's working just fine. Help!
wifi network connections? I have a Dell PC using XP and have bought a Dell Laptop using Vista. The PC modem/router is D-Link DSL504T and the wireless router is a Belkin G Router. I want to be able to access internet/email on either computer at the same time. I also have a D-Link DVG2001S phone router for voip. The instructions provided do not seem to allow this. How can I configure the routers to make it work? A diagram would be helpful if possible as well as instructions. Jim Also can I get an attachment to allow printing with wifi from the laptop.
VoIP on iPhone? I know this might sound like a stupid question, since the iPhone is a phone in and of itself, but I'm wondering if there's anyway to make VoIP calls on the iPhone over WiFi. That way I'm not eating up airtime minutes when I'm at home anyway. I know TMobile has some kind of plan like that, but I wonder if there's any kind of application for the iPhone that can do the same thing by itself.
Can the new touch ipod support Skype(VOIP)? So here's what I'm wondering.... If the new ipod offers wifi capabilities will it be possible to run Skype and use it as a phone? I haven't seen anything about it running an OS or being able to support downloads other than itunes...but if you can download itunes and run safari, will this eventually be possible? What about the possibility of Skype developing something that will run on the new ipods? Maybe Apple has already considered this, or maybe even has this planned for future versions? oh the possibilities!!!!!!!
Philips VOIP8411B/37 Skype wireless phone how does it work? hi so i'm thinking of getting a Philips VOIP8411B/37 Skype wireless phone. i want to use it in internet cafes or hot spots. i see that it comes packaged with some type of base. the question is do i have to plug anything into a computer like a USB dongle to get this to work or can i simple just walk into a wifi spot and make international phone calls for free to a skype user? i really want one if it works. if it's clear and easy to use and i can just walk into a wifi spot and take a call then i want it. if the technology is not there...i don't want to buy it. also can anyone explain what this new technology called "DECT" technology does? here is what i'm looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com/Philips-VOIP8411B-37-Skype-Certified-VOIP-DECT-Phone_W0QQitemZ310008106544QQihZ021QQcategoryZ121146QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

NETGEAR’s WiFi Phone (SPH200W-100NAS) ? If can somebody tell me quality wise, what is the real difference between Netgear SPH200W WiFi Phone with Skype and other VOIP service provider like Vonage ,I really appreciate?
MacBook problem switching between Airport and Ethernet? I use my MacBook both at my desk and around the property. Historically, when I have been at my desk, I have plugged in the Ethernet cable for faster speeds... and when I am up and around, I use the WiFi/Airport. Here lately, for no reason it seems, my MacBook will only connect to the Net via wireless. I can be at my desk with the Ethernet cable plugged in, but it still connects *only* through Airport. When I turn Airport off, there is no connection even though the Ethernet cable is plugged in. I know the router is fine, since we have three VOIP phone lines hooked into it working perfectly. Is there a setting or something I need to check? I have not made any changes to the network preferences lately. Any help is appreciated.
Salary Expectations? Hi, I am due to enter negotiations regarding my salary. I have around 8 years experience in IT from a career point of view, and have trained towards an MCSA (waiting for exams). I am looking after 14 servers in 3 locations. We are opening another office down south which I will be expected to support The servers include 4 DC'c, 2 Exchange servers, 1 SQL Server, File Servers, FTP Servers; as well as the company phone system, copiers, software licencing and 3 netscreens and 1 WiFi bridge and to support approx 45 staff I am also expected to source new technology like media players, etc for the work the company actually does. We are increasing the servers to around 20 in the next fews months as well implementing company wide VoIP technology and better WAN comms. What I need to know is should I be asking for more than the £25,000 plus car I am currently on? My TItle is IT Manager and I am in the East Midlands area Cheers
iPod touch or iPhone? I recently bought an 8gb iPod Touch. It is so rad. But is an iPhone still more cool? I was thinking about buying an iPhone, but with the obligated new 2-year agreement, I decided against it. The only difference between an iPod touch and iPhone is the iPhone has: a phone (obviously), Bluetooth, Edge, & a camera. Other than that, iPhones are thicker, heavier, and you have to pay for a plan... And a new one at that. However, for the iPod touch, they just came out with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)... To where all you need to buy is a microphone for your iPod touch and you can make calls when your connected to WiFi. That is cool and it makes an iPod touch essentially an iPhone. With the exeption of having to be connected to WiFi. ANYWAYS, to sum it up, what do you think is better and/or more cool. iPod Touch, or iPhone???
How can I increase my internet speed? I use an aircard, which relies on cell phone towers for access. I am with centennial wireless, i called them and they told me there is no way possible to do this, because it depends on the towers, yet many companies out there are able to make their satellite users service compatible with VOIP's which is what I need for my work at home jobs. Dial-up,DSL and cable connections are not an option for me. I know this is a tricky one guys, but I need the help desperately. Also, they told me I could get a modem that uses wifi and has a VOIP built into it, which would offer speeds comparable to DSL, and I could bring the modem any where in the service area and plug in anyone's phone jack, but this still uses satellite connection, so I asked the difference b/w that and my aircard, and I was told the "equipment" which by the way is $499.99, plus $40 dollars/month. Compared to my aircard($99) and monthly unlimited service($40).sounds like they are just trying to make more money. when I asked if ever the speeds for aircards would be increased to be compared with DSL, like the modems can, which is still uses the same point the, the tower. His response was "maybe" what can I do. I can only work from home, I need faster upload and downloads for the job b/c of the VOIP. Please help, any one with any suggestions or other options will be thanked.
I travel a lot, I have a laptop and a VOIP phone I need to access the hotel wifi system? So if I have a linksys wireless router/gateway will it act as a receiver from the hotel wifi system so I can get internet to both my computer and my VOIP box? The VOIP box must have a cable and the computer is an older laptop with no wireless capability. I carry the voip box with me because it has my phone number programmed in it and when anyone calls it my phone rings no matter where I am in the world so long as I am connected to the internet... the wireless thing has really messed me up with my phone/computer

My TItle is IT Manager and I am in the East Midlands area Cheers Incedently I did study and gain a Computer Science HND (Could not afford the extra two years!!) I consider the title more Management of IT rather than "IT Manager", but I do attend the main management meetings, and am considered a senior member of staff. I only ask the question after a conversation I had with someone who said that people he had intervoed and knew in my area, and in similar sized businesses were earning better packages than me. It is sometimes difficult to measure yourself against the industry standard when working for an SME as you are expected to wear so many hats. In repsonse to some of the questions, yes I do support all the Server applications, although I do require more specialised support for SQL. I also do basic front line support for the end user applications like 3D max, Microstation and Solidworks.
