VoIP service & faxing issues - can someone explain why?

Hi, Can someone explain to me why there are issues with some fax machines using VoIP? This is really frustrating and I'd like to know when we can all expect these issues to be resolved. I have a VoIP phone and my new all-in-one machine can't fax or receive faxes because of my VoIP service. I'm really bummed about this. If anyone has any insight into why this is a problem and when companies will be resolving these communication issues I would really like to know. Thanks in advance!! I have an old fax machine (which is a stand alone unit and does not hook up to my computer) that faxes fine over my VoIP service but my new all-in-one, which does work with my computer, won't work with VoIP. Really frustrating as I don't understand why one is affected and the other isn't. I did install the software that came with my all-in-one. The manufacturer of my unit said they don't support VoIP for faxing at this time. I would like to know why faxing doesn't work with VoIP. My machine starts to connect, when faxing, but then I get a communications error. I don't understand why the two can't work together. What is the difference between a regular fax machine, which will fax over VoIP and my all-in-one unit?

  1. the reason the new one doesn't work is because it doesn't have a fax modem in it. it isn't a stand alone like your old one. in order to fax with the new one, you'll need to install the fax software off the cd that came with the all in one and also you have to have a dial-up modem in your computer to do the fax dialing. once you have all this, you'll hook a line into the dial-up modem and you can then fax. if you read the manual for the all-in one, it tells you this.
  2. if you have a stand-alone fax-machine....just change your baud-rate to 9600 and use the over-seas mode!
