Best VOIP service to take to China (Shanghai). or just go Cellular?
relocating to China, and need to get a VOIP provider as I'm hoping I can conduct business with a US telephone number. I keep reading that Chinese ISP's block VOIP service, so i do not want to get over there and have nothing. So we are considering using cells, but do not want to get jammed with outrageous costs, whats the best route to go?

- I am in China too and I made good experience with voipbuster.com. Furthermore, you also get some free calls.
- Best way will be to over ride the blockage and they you can use any of your favorate VoIP like yahoo Voice. with yahoo you can have US local number. or you can use any hardware based VoIP like Vonage / lingo etc. To unblock the VoIP you need to have VPN service outside China. I am using the following which enables me to clear off all the blocks including Voips. http://www.vpngates.com/?aid=madhu_amin if you need more info contact me.
- Definitely go VOIP! If you go cellular, you'll get hit with a massive bill so hard that your grandkids will feel it... VOIP service is quite competitive, bit I am extremely happy with Vonage's service. Here is their latest savings offer...
- Ok, VoIP is definately better but internet is totally unreliable. Getting around blocks is a hassle, and China's bandwidth doesn't make for very VoIP-friendly connections. You would have to come to China with some special software and computer systems too... so research that before you come. International cell phones would be massively expensive. It's a toss-up. Shanghai is a big city and central hub, so service is better. If your corporation is big you may be able to get a dedicated line (and have your service provider put you on a "preferred customer list" = better internet connection). I hope that your business isn't time sensitive, because I can guarantee you that if you go with VoIP, a couple times a month you won't have service.
